About Me

MACKIE SPRINGER

Like a lot of photographers, I started very early. My dad was a small-town professional who occasionally photographed small weddings and graduating seniors. As a little kid, I'd drag out his cameras and equipment and play with them on the floor. I liked gadgets, and I loved pictures.

Fast forward to 1983, sitting in my 7th grade English class, one of the high school teachers, Mrs. McKeel, came to the classroom door and announced she needed to see Mackie Springer. I exited the classroom, and she said, follow me. I had already had a paddling the week before, and this was probably another one for something I had done. I was going down the list; bought cokes from the teacher's lounge? Possibly. Spitballs in Mr. Links's class? Maybe. We ended up in the back of the high school biology class as Mr. Vanamburg lectured behind the lab tables, and Mrs. McKeel took out keys and opened the darkroom door. She whispered, "You are the new yearbook photographer, and this is where you will develop the pictures you will take while you are a yearbook photographer. You do know how, right? Your dad has his own darkroom." "No, ma'am," I answered. She said, "Then I will teach you," and she did. Since then, I have had a camera in my hands.

In my early 30s, I got serious about photography. I eased my way from film to digital as soon as the 8 Megapixel DSLRs became available. A career in Medical Imaging also helped much more than one would expect. My Navy days provided that education, and my dad provided the education of F-stop, shutter speed, and ISO. As time passed and I grew older, my dad purchased a Minolta XG-1 and gave it to me, and I still have it. Unfortunately, my dad passed away when I was 22 and never saw me reach any real potential. After being a wedding and senior graduate photographer for 15 years, I put down the camera after several tragedies in my life. I picked it back up after six years when I finally married my wife, Dava. I tried to get back into portrait photography again, but I'd rather be outside in the quiet. The water, land, sea, sky, fish, and animals don't talk, which is awesome! Photography is what I love.
